The Position: PAR seeks two enthusiastic Advance Practice Clinicians (APC) to support PAR’s Sleep Disorders clinics. The positions report to the supervising physician(s). There are no direct reports to the position.
Job Responsibilities
Responsible for providing medical care as delegated by the supervising physician(s) in the fields of Pulmonary and Sleep medicine. This entails the provision of primary care services, including assessing and managing patients in the outpatient setting following established standards and practices.
This position will operate in an outpatient facility. The hours of work are Monday-Friday only. No weekend hours or on-call required.
• Assesses patient health status including state of wellness and compliance with care plan. Determines and performs and/or prescribes appropriate diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
• Provides acute and chronic patient care including taking histories, completing physical examinations, completing patient assessments and formulation of medical care planning to complete patient care including writing of medication prescriptions as appointed by Virginia law and the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency.
• Triages patient calls and evaluates patient problems. This includes the administration of medications and injections in compliance with applicable federal and state law as well as clinic guidelines.
• Responds to emergencies including, but not limited to, the use of CPR and ACLS.
• Documents patient information and care provided in patient record and maintains department statistics. Uses computer to access/enter needed data.
• Educates patients and families as appropriate. This includes instructing the patient/family about health and illness prevention. Charged with recommending community resources that may aid in meeting patient/family needs.
• Responsible for monitoring and continuity of care between physician visits. Maintains and reviews patient records, charts and other pertinent information. Posts tests and examination results.
• Consults with other staff as necessary. This includes collaboration with physicians in managing acute and long-term medical needs of patients.
• Orders and interprets spirograms or complete PFTs and O2 saturation testing (6-minute Walk, nocturnal oxygen saturation) and other tests as clinically indicated.
• Prescribes and evaluates polysomnograms for sleep clinic patients and prescribes appropriate therapeutic equipment.
• Maintains patient confidentiality at all times.
REQUIREMENTS: A minimum of two years’ clinical experience is preferred. Nurse Practitioner: Must maintain RN and NP licensure and NP Board Certification. Physician Assistant: Must maintain PA licensure.
KNOWLEDGE:
• Knowledge of professional advance practice clinician theory, practices and regulations to give and evaluate patient care.
• Knowledge of health promotion principles and techniques and patient learning measurements.
• Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish/maintain a safe working environment.
SKILLS:
• Skill in gathering and analyzing patient data as it relates to pulmonary and sleep medicine.
• Skill in accurately evaluating patient problems in person or via phone and providing appropriate advice, intervention, or referral.
• Skill in evaluating and revising care plans based on patient changes on a daily basis.
• Skill in applying and modifying the principles, methods, and techniques of professional nursing/ physician assistantship to provide ongoing patient care.
ABILITIES:
• Ability to make responsible decisions within the scope of a dependent medical practitioner. It is also critical that the job holder recognizes the limits of scope of practice and consult with supervising physician(s).

ENVIRONMENTAL/WORKING CONDITIONS: Medical office/exam room settings. Frequent exposure to communicable diseases, toxic substances, medical preparations, and other conditions common to clinic environments. Frequent contact with a variety of people.
PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS: Standing, sitting, walking, bending, stooping, twisting, some lifting. Requires ability to help transfer patients. Occasional stress from dealing with multiple tasks and tense patients. Requires full range of motion, manual dexterity, eye-hand coordination. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range. Requires working under stress in emergency situations and irregular hours.
