The Sleep Medicine Division, under the Department of Neurology at the VA Maryland Health Care System, is recruiting two Sleep Medicine Physicians: Physicians with board certification in either Neurology or Pulmonology.
The Sleep Medicine program partners with numerous subspecialists, including Psychology, Psychiatry, ENT, Dentistry, Neurology, Pulmonary, Medicine, and Primary Care. You will join the current Sleep Medicine team of three Sleep Medicine physicians, a nurse practitioner, a nurse case manager, sleep technicians, and respiratory therapists. The selected physicians are expected to participate in the training of fellows from the Sleep Medicine division at the University of Maryland Medical Center, residents from Neurology, Internal Medicine, Family Practice, and Pulmonology, as well as medical students from the affiliated College of Medicine. Candidates should have (1) completed an accredited Sleep Medicine fellowship, (2) be boarded in Sleep Medicine, and (3) be qualified to obtain an academic appointment at the University of Maryland.
Sleep Medicine Physician’s Major Duties:
Provides direct patient care, supervision of trainees in clinics, writing of prescription medications, writing for consultative services, and other physician-driven or exclusive decisions.
Applies National and VA guidelines to patient screening, surveillance, and management of such diseases.
Diagnosis and treatment of inpatients and outpatients with sleep disorders with medications and other modalities such as PAP devices, oral appliance, other non-PAP devices, referral for hypoglossal nerve stimulation therapy, maxillofacial and upper airway surgery.
Works closely with other specialties and primary care physicians to ensure that patients receive continuous quality care as well as function with a large complex organization that requires cooperation with multiple services, including community care, prosthetics service, medical administration, medical records, etc.
Provides outpatient and inpatient consultation services related to Sleep Medicine. Participates in quality improvement programs, chart reviews, peer reviews, clinical research and other academic activities as assigned.
Participates in specialty-specific duties and other duties as assigned. Demonstrate verbal, written, and interpersonal communication skills that are commensurate with the responsibilities of the position.
Function with parameters set by VA with regard to consult management, utilizing order sets in Electronic Medical Record Systems (EMRs), documentation in EMR, and other requirements of the VA’s electronic medical record system.
This position is eligible for the Education Debt Reduction Program (EDRP), a student loan payment reimbursement program.
