Occ Summary
The Clinical Lead, Respiratory Therapist (RT) is a role developed towork in coordination with the RT leadership in an ass igned unit ordepartment to ensure the work is accomplished effectively. The ClinicalLead RT is the first line of support for staff, physicians, and otherrelated providers on concerning RT specific clinical issues an d topics.They will supervise, perform, evaluate and coordinate diagnosti c andtherapeutic clinical procedures as defined in the Respiratory CareS ervices scope of clinical practice, performing work in accordance withph ysician orders in the neonatal, pediatric and adult patientpopulations i n intermediate, intensive and emergency care areas. Theywill be respon sible for supervising, coaching, and mentoring theirassigned core group of staff.
Work Performed
Clinical Support- Perform al l duties and responsibilities of the Respiratory CarePractitioner Advanc ed and Respiratory Care Practitioner, ECMO.- RT staff resource/expert co ncerning all clinical and operationalquestions/issues.- Demonstrates str ong critical thinking skills by makingappropriate decisions. Rapidly pr ioritizes both planned and unplannedevents, and proactively addresses ac tual and potential problems,exceedingpatient or client expectations.- I nstruct and supervise patient and therapeutic assessments toassure optim al medical decisions.- Expert in all RT technology in the assigned depar tments.- Coordinate all emergency responses.- Assist in the development/ updates with clinical care protocols/policyand procedures.- Evaluate pat ient care plans.- Ability to interact with physicians/medical staff on a high level.- Function as a liaison between Clinical Resource Manager, a ndClinical Engineering to ensure proper operation and service ofequipmen t. Document and report any malfunctioning or broken equipment.- Assure s afe and appropriate working environment.- Assure appropriate staff and s kill level for each patient carearea.- ECMO Specialist.Leadership/Manage rial- Develop expected job results, performance plans, and professionalg oals for assigned staff.- Appraise performance of all staff members.- Pr ovide input into applicant hiring and termination decisions.- Monitor an d report all patient care, safety, medication,technical, and employee in cidents.- Monitor adherence to policy, procedures and practice guideline s.- Monitor ventilator protocol adherence.- Implement any necessary corr ective actions in a timely manner.- Conduct shift planning to include assignments and redirection ofstaff as needed.- Assure appropriate supply inventory.- Provide feedback for all schedule assignments.- Coordinate a nd monitor departmental improvement projects.- Communicate daily activit ies to RT leadershipEducation/Mentoring- Provide orientation, education and training as needed internaland external to Duke Respiratory Care Ser vices.- Assure/Assess respiratory care staff competency and safety.- Pla n and conduct instructional sessions.- Communicate/educate changes in po licy and procedures in aneffective/consistent manner.Other- Coordinate t he evaluation of products/equipment.- Provide input into departmental eq uipment selection and function.- Assist with all departmental clinical r esearch projects.- Serve on department related committees

Minimum Qualifications
Education
Work requires completion of a Bachelor's degree in Respiratory Care, Healthcare, Business, or a field related to the assigned clinical discipline. Note: Candidates without a Bachelor's degree will be required to complete their degree within three (3) years of appointment.
Experience
Five years of experience in clinical respiratory therapy, including at least three years of experience in intensive care respiratory therapy; supervisory experience preferred.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications
- Current RT licensure from the North Carolina State Board of Respiratory Care - Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) by the National Board for Respiratory Care (NBRC) - Certification in Basic Life Support(BLS) - Certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) - Certification in Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS) - Certification in Neonatal Resuscitation Program (if applicable) - Respiratory Specific Certifications (to be completed within 1 yearof hire) - Adult Clinical Lead RT - Adult Critical Care Specialist (ACCS) - Pediatric Clinical Lead RT - Neonatal Pediatric Specialist (NPS)
