Position Title: Pre/Post-op Supervisor Nurse
Position Purpose: Responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient family centered care in the pre-operative, PACU and other areas of perioperative services for all patient populations. Provides functional direction to members of the pre-op and PACU team to achieve optimal patient outcomes while optimizing available resources including surgical case management and perioperative patient care coordination
Position Reports to: Clinical Leader
Degree of Supervision Provided to Position: Must be self-directed and work under direction of the Clinical Leader.

Primary Responsibilities:
⢠Promote the mission, vision, and values of SCA.
⢠Assess patientâ™s preoperative and postoperative status at intervals according to facility or health care organization policies and procedures to include the patientâ™s cardiovascular system,espiratory system and airway management needs, neurological system, hemodynamic stability, pain and comfort needs, and mental status.
⢠Interpret information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors.
⢠Describe the underlying pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes.
⢠Describe the physiology associated with various anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions.
⢠Apply the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer (e.g., Aldrete Score, Modified Aldrete Score [i.e., PARSAP], Post Anesthesia Discharge Scoring System [PADSS], White) score accurately as defined by organizational policy.
Develop an individualized perianesthesia plan of care by implementing:
Preparing for and managing patient recovery from anesthesia â“ general.
Preparing for and managing patient recovery from anesthesia â“ monitored anesthesia care.
Preparing for and managing patient recovery from anesthesia â“ regional.
Preparing for and managing patient recovery from anesthesia â“ local.
o Protecting the patient from injury caused by extraneous objects and chemical, electrical, mechanical, and thermal sources.
o Demonstrating safe operation of equipment and machinery and follows procedures for reporting and correcting an unsafe situation.
o Speaking up with safety concerns acting as the patientâ™s advocate. o Handling specimens according to facility policy and procedures.
o Adhering to standard precautions including the use of personal protective equipment.
o Communicating the patientâ™s current status to relevant parties throughout the continuum of care.
o Administering medications safely and correctly by using the 8-rights of safe medication administration.
o Performing interventions to maintain the integrity of the patientâ™s wound and tissue perfusion at or above baseline levels.
o Performing interventions to ensure the patient is at or returned to normothermia at the conclusion of the immediate postoperative period.
o Providing nursing and appropriate monitoring in accordance with policies and procedures.
o Performing interventions to protect patient from infection.
o Managing patientâ™s other co-morbid conditions as applicable.
o Managing patientâ™s fluid as prescribed.
o Assessing knowledge level of patient or designated support person
o Providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure.
o Involving patient or designated support person actively in decisions affecting his or her perioperative plan of care and the rehabilitation process.
o Protecting patientâ™s rights, dignity, and privacy.
o Providing age-specific, culturally competent, ethical care within legal standards of practice.
o Complying with Universal Protocol and facility site validation and time-out policy.
⢠Evaluate the patientâ™s progress toward attaining outcomes.
⢠Transfer care as needed.
⢠Provide hand-off report to other teammates that are accurate, concise and pertinent to the patientâ™s condition and response to care.
⢠Delegate tasks according to the state Nurse Practice Act (if applicable), state board of nursing or professional registration requirements, state laws, and job descriptions.
⢠Document episode of care completely, accurately, and legibly.
⢠Manage the pre-operative and PACU area both operationally and fiscally during tour of duty.
⢠Act as a clinical resource for personnel using current literature and guidelines, organizational policies and procedures, and regulatory and accreditation standards.
⢠Assist personnel in the evaluation of current practice through quality and performance improvement activities.
⢠Demonstrate effective communication and collaboration skills with members of the perioperative team and other stakeholders.
⢠Coordinate, facilitate, and manage change within the pre-op and PACU area.
⢠Serve as a member of a multidisciplinary team in planning perioperative patient care.
⢠Use effective conflict resolution techniques.
⢠Collect and analyze data applicable to perioperative services to facilitate collaboration and negotiation with stakeholders.
⢠Participate in interviews for personnel selection.
⢠Assist in evaluating personnel performance.
⢠Monitor that necessary personnel, equipment, and supplies are available.
⢠Participate in quality review and performance improvement projects.
⢠Participate in the performance appraisal process.
