Middleton VA Hospital employs Physician Assistants in the Cardiology Department. The Physician Assistant (PA) is an integral part of the healthcare team and is called upon for several important duties. The Cardiology PA assists with the total care of the patient's medical needs by performing history and physical exams, ordering appropriate diagnostic tests, evaluating those test results, and otherwise acting within the guidelines established by the collaborating physician to ensure quality care of the patient. The Cardiology PA assists with the coordination of care for assigned patients in any care setting, including establishing diagnoses, formulating and implementing care plans, prescribing medications, and providing follow-up care. This will include managing patients with multiple chronic medical problems, submitting referrals to other specialty services, and providing education to the patient and their family regarding cardiac disease, options for treatment, and recommended diagnostic tests. The Cardiology PA will also assist in providing recommendations for lifestyle modification including but not limited to dietary modification, exercise prescription, and tobacco cessation. The PA utilizes specialized advanced knowledge and skills of physical assessment, diagnosis of disease entities and treatment modalities to develop comprehensive plans of care for this complex patient population. The PA is also responsible for collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to ensure that established guidelines and standards of care as developed and/or modified are incorporated into the clinical and program designs. The Cardiology PA will provide department-specific services including but not limited to obtaining informed consent for noninvasive cardiac procedures, supervising exercise and pharmacologic stress tests, and performing and documenting histories and physical exams in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Other duties may also be assigned to assist the department as determined by the Cardiology Service Chief. The Physician Assistant is a skilled health care provider who utilizes knowledge and critical judgment to manage acute and chronic disease. This includes performing comprehensive health assessments, formulating differential diagnoses, and prescribing pharmacological and non-pharmacological treatments. In addition, the physician assistant works with patients and families to promote wellness and to prevent illness and injury. The Physician Assistant will further support the VA mission thru participation in applicable VA national, VISN, and local quality and process improvement initiatives. This includes, but is not limited to, Performance Measures & Monitors and Systems Redesign/Advanced Clinical Access. The incumbent will work with supervisory and front-line staff in his/her own and other service lines to foster and improve the operation of their assigned section. Under direction of the Chief of Cardiology, Physician Assistants prepare and review reports, participate in Quality initiatives, and work to achieve performance metrics as described by the VA Central office, National Surgery Office, VISN, or the local medical center.
