The VA Ann Arbor Healthcare System is seeking a Registered Nurse, VA Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) Coordinator, to be a member of the Quality Management Team. The VA Surgical Quality Improvement Program (VASQIP) Coordinator is accountable to the Chief, Quality Management and is responsible for the administrative and scientific conduct of both the cardiac and non-cardiac components of the National Surgical Quality Improvement Program including, but not limited to, clinical screening, data compilation, documentation and entry into the data base of all eligible patients cases. The incumbent is expected to attend all program conferences and work on his/her own initiative in carrying out routine assignments independently without specific instruction after orientation to the position has been completed. The incumbent supports facility activities in the coordination and development of data collection and analysis techniques, primarily in the areas of surgical Performance Measures, ORYX, and Performance Improvement indicators. Incumbent is knowledgeable of Performance Improvement principles, statistical processes, and tools including trend and comparative analyses and has the expertise to make recommendations based on findings. The incumbent reviews all performance improvement data for assigned areas and assists responsible staff in initiating/facilitating appropriate action based on VA guidance documents. The incumbent facilitates education of personnel on performance improvement both in the facility orientation of employees and in specific training for those involved in the performance improvement activities within services, on hospital committees, and/or within performance improvement teams. The incumbent conducts various patient care studies based on areas assigned, including review of patient incident reports, medical record reviews for evidence of required documentation as well as reviews for the quality and safety of care, treatment, and services provided. The incumbent provides clinical expertise and consultation to assist in data driven decision making and performance improvement matters. The incumbent conducts tracers and operational assessments, participates in the design and analysis of special studies to define the cause and scope of issues or trends, and assists in the identification of appropriate criteria for problem resolution. Analysis includes monitoring, tracking, and trending along with other statistically valid techniques to assist in focusing program efforts. The incumbent participates in the development of innovative approaches to the establishment, enhancement, modification, and/or improvements in a variety of facility programs related to performance improvement/quality management. The incumbent reviews service/section/committee meeting minutes for assessment and improvement activities including findings, recommendations, follow-up actions and evaluations. Also, the incumbent closely monitors and advises services and committees of topics that need to be addressed at meetings in order to meet regulatory or performance standards compliance. The incumbent facilitates and maintains a record tracking system for monitoring a variety of information, potential problem areas and action plans, and coordinates action plans for addressing opportunities for improvement. Evaluates achievement of objectives based on planned levels and actual performance, assesses status, and develops improvement plans.
