JOB SUMMARY:

The Medical Genetics NP demonstrates an advanced level of medical and nursing knowledge, clinical/technical competence, sound clinical judgment, professional communication skills, timely and compliant documentation, and is responsible for professional development and competency validation.

The NP will serve as a coordinator of the recently launched Undiagnosed Disease Program. They will coordinate care of the patient. amongst the various MD providers and the research teams. They will also help with data collection, help with visit planning, formulation of evaluation reports, coordination of testing. The NP will participate in professional development by maintaining required competencies, identifying learning needs and seeking appropriate educational offerings. The NP will demonstrate a commitment to patient safety by speaking up about safety issues and changing practice to enhance safety and will share errors or potential errors through system reporting mechanisms. The NP will demonstrate shared accountability for safe practice.

The NP may in certain instances provide direct patient care as a billing provider by demonstrating clinical expertise in assessment, diagnostic reasoning, and the therapeutic management of patients.The NP will use research and theoretical principles in implementing therapies that restore health, minimize complications, and manage risk factors as we strive to integrate patient care across the continuum of health care services in collaboration with other healthcare professionals, families, and patients.

Additional Key Elements/ Responsibilities:

Job responsibilities include but are not limited to:

1. Patient Care Services

  • Coordinate Patient Care for multiple specialties within the Undiagnosed Disease Services.
  • Communicate with patients about their health conditions
  • Knowledge of examination, diagnostic, and treatment room procedures.
  • Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
  • Knowledge of OSHA, Infection Control, and safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe working environment.
  • Knowledge of electronic chart documentation requirements and recording test results.
  • Knowledge of IRB protocols and procedures

2. Coordinate Clinic Administrative Responsibilities

  • Review Patient Records
  • Field patient phone calls and message baskets
  • Ability to manage multiple tasks independently.
  • Ability to work with multiple agencies and a multidisciplinary team
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships with vulnerable and complex patients, diverse medical staff, and the public.
  • Ability to maintain quality control standards.
  • Ability to interpret, adapt and apply guidelines and procedures.
  • Ability to operate computer and multi-function printer, general office equipment, and telephone equipment.

3. Professional Responsibilities

  • Maintenance of Basic Life Support Health Care Provider card
  • Core Competencies: Patient Assessment, Clinical Procedure with Scope of Service.
  • Knowledge of commonly used computer software and excellent communication skills are required.

Position Qualifications:

Master's Degree (or equivalent experience) and < 1 year experience. 12 months of nursing experience preferred; Inpatient acute care advanced practice nursing experience desirable.

Registered Nurse (Required)

Licensure, Certification, and/or Registration (LCR):

  • Registered Nurse Required

Additional Qualification Information:

  • Prefer National Specialty Board Certification, TN APN certificate/certificate of fitness to prescribe, eligible for DEA
  • At least three years of experience as a licensed Nurse Practitioner; Genetics experience is highly desirable
  • Graduate of an accredited school of nursing, graduate of an accredited Nurse Practitioner Program.
  • Current Advance Practice Registered Nurse (APRN) Licensure for the State of Tennessee.
  • Possess Nurse Practitioner certification in specialty area.
  • Current provider in Basic Life Support (BLS) and Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS).
  • Must be a registered nurse in the State of Tennessee and be board certified/board eligible to practice as a Certified Nurse.
  • Eligible for a certificate of fitness to prescribe medication in the State of Tennessee, if applicable.
  • The NP must be able to demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate for patients
